Brain Teaser

The challenge:
According to the story:  A lady in California wrote this puzzle in 1890 in response to a gentleman in Philadelphia, who said that he would pay $1,000 to anyone who could write a puzzle that he could not solve. He failed to do so, and paid the lady $1,000 (a great sum at that time).  The answer is one (1) word, five (5) letters long, and appears only four (4) times in the King James Version of the Bible.

The answer:
Whale.  [EGW editor: This word is used in Genesis 1:21; Job 7:12; Ezekiel 32:2; Matthew 12:40 of the King James Version.  Please note that in biblical times, “whale” simply referred to any huge creature living in the sea.  This would include the ocean-dwelling mammals (i.e. whales, walruses, manatees) along with fish (i.e. groupers, swordfish, the larger sharks), large invertebrates (i.e. giant squids, giant octopi), the larger sea-going reptiles, and even anything we might describe as a sea monster.]
